    Professional Experience

Dr. Flick's professional career since 1978 involves academic research, administration, lecturing, consulting and public service in oceanography and nearshore processes including waves, tides and coastal erosion. His broad, practical experience includes theoretical, laboratory, field and sea-going work. He has served on several Scripps students' masters and doctoral committees, and on thesis committees at universities in Egypt and Mexico.

Dr. Flick has lectured extensively on physical oceanography and coastal processes using a large collection of illustrative slides. He is an enthusiastic and entertaining speaker, and especially enjoys explaining technical and scientific concepts and results to non-specialists.

As staff Oceanographer for the California Department of Boating and Waterways, Dr. Flick conducts academic research and public education and manages study programs at Scripps totaling over $2 million annually.

His original research is in the areas of tides, sea level fluctuations, waves, beach sand level changes, local and regional beach and cliff erosion, and coastal storm damage.

Dr. Flick has served as an expert witness in tidal boundary disputes before the United States Supreme Court and the 200th District Court in Texas, and as a consulting expert in other litigation. Dr. Flick re-wrote the entry on Tides for World Book Encyclopedia.

Dr. Flick is the Editor of Shore & Beach, the quarterly refereed journal of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association. He received the association's 2002 Morrough P. O'Brien award.

Dr. Flick has monitored environmental impacts of engineering works in southern California, including innovative shore protection strategies and the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. He has co-authored and edited a two volume shoreline erosion assessment and atlas of the San Diego region.

In overseas work, Dr. Flick in 1991 co-authored two feasibility studies for a proposed cruise ship harbor in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and studied the oceanic, beach, wave, and tidal processes impacting a coastal resort lagoon on Isla Margarita, off the Caribbean coast of Venezuela.

Most recently, he has participated in comprehensive wave, inlet hydrology and water quality monitoring programs at several San Diego area coastal lagoons.

Between 1964 and 1982, Dr. Flick worked as a lifeguard and volunteer swimming and lifesaving teacher. He is a Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructor, YMCA and NAUI certified SCUBA diver, and ASA Basic Sailing Instructor.
