Point Sur soundings
Shown here are soundings for the Point
Sur region. They were released by Dr. Wendell Nuss at the Naval Postgraduate
School.
Black = temperature (C)
Blue = wind speed (m/s)
Red = wind direction (pointing down = northerly wind)
Altitude is calculated from pressure assuming a standard atmospheric
pressure and temperature at sea level. They are all plotted on the same
axes.
Data questions
The surface conditions were set manually and so are less reliable than
higher measurments. Problems with low level winds (such as the very high
variability) are due to the problem of locking on to the released sondes.
Note that winds are much lower than seen in the aircraft profiles taken
over the water--is this due to the difference in surface roughness? Low
inversions would not be sampled by the sonde, which begins to take data
at higher altitudes.
