Scorer parameter

The Scorer parameter indicates vertical trapping of linear waves generated at the ground (Scorer, 1949). l(z)^2 = (N/U)^2-
(1/U) Uzz.  The profiles resampled to be regular in altitude and smoothed so that the second derivative of speed, Uzz, would remain reasonable.  Derivatives were estimated using centered difference formulae.

From left to right, the plots show:

  1. Scorer parameter (1/m^2).  Negative values are shaded.  Only [-1e-5 1e-5] is shown to make sure negative regions can be seen.
  2. Virtual potential temperature (K) in black, speed (m/s) in blue.  The unsmoothed and smoothed profiles are shown.  The small map shows the profile location (red cross.)
  3. The contribution to the Scorer parameter from the stability term (N/U)^2 in blue and curvature term (1/U)d2U/dz2 in black in (1/m^2).  Negative values are shaded.
  4. The minimum wavelength that will propagate (wavelengths > 2*pi*N/U km).


The table cells indicate the flight date flown near the 4 capes.   The number indicates which profile on that flight is plotted.
