Santa Barbara Channel - Santa Maria Basin Circulation Study

DRIFTER INTRODUCTION

Regional Coverage
Drifter deployments are primarily made within the Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Maria Basin. There are 24 permanent sites used for drifter releases. These are shown in the figure below. In the early stages of this project (through 1995) only the 12 sites (red dots) in the Santa Barbara Channel were used. 12 additional sites (blue dots) in the Santa Maria Basin were added starting in 1996. Most of the deployment sites coincide with current or historical mooring locations.

Additionally, a few drifter pairs have been deployed during oil spill events close to spill sites to aid in spill containment efforts.

Data collection
A batch of drifters is deployed every few months. During a deployment drifters are released at each site over a period of several hours. The electronics package in the drifters is programmed to transmit data for 40 days.

A complete list of deployments can be found in the Drifter Deployment Table.
