IOD Data Backup Policies

EMC Retrospect (Mac desktop and Mac laptop computers located in the CCS building):

• A full backup is made of each Mac Desktop every four weeks.
• Mac Desktops are backed up incrementally every night starting at 8pm.
• Mac Laptops backup routinely during the day whenever they are connected to the network. Priority is based on elapsed time since the last backup.

Directories backed up:

• Everything in the /Users directory, except the Music folder.
• No OS files are backed up for the Mac Desktops or Laptops.

Retention Policy:

• Mac Desktop and Laptop backup tape sets are retained for 16 weeks, (approximately 4 months).
• Starting on a Friday, after the 16 week cycle, the backup set is recycled back into the tape pool and overwritten with a full backup.

EMC Networker (Sun, Linux, Mac Servers, and managed Linux and Sun desktops):

• Full backups are preformed on the first Friday of the month.
• Incremental back ups are preformed nightly starting at 9:30pm.

Directories backed up:

• All file systems, including the OS (excluding /tmp).
• All user data.

Retention policy:

• Backup tape sets are retained for four (4) months: the current monthly tape set in the tape jukebox plus the previous three (3) months of tape sets.
• On the first Friday of each month, the oldest backup tape set is recycled back into the tape pool and overwritten with a full backup.
